The Atlantic Council’s Future Europe Initiative and Strategic Foresight Initiative held a private, off-the-record, lunch discussion on “Strategic Cyprus in a Better Mediterranean Future” with Ambassador Michalis Attalides, Chairman of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence at the University of Nicosia, on April 11, 2016. Ambassador Attalides discussed how to leverage a Cyprus settlement to advance stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean and how Cyprus can best play a strategic role in the region. This discussion is part of the Atlantic Council’s Mediterranean Futures project which seeks to explore alternative futures for the greater Mediterranean region.
Ambassador Attalides has previously represented the Republic of Cyprus as Ambassador to a number of capitals, including Paris, London, and the European Union before being appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has also lectured at the University of Leicester, the Free University of Berlin, and held academic posts at the University of Nicosia since retiring from government in 2003.
