Please join the Atlantic Council Europe Center and Global Energy Center on Wednesday, May 17, from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. ET for a virtual conversation with The Right Honorable Grant Shapps MP, UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine, the COVID pandemic, and rising prices have exposed the risks of energy sector underinvestment and dependency on malign actors, and the urgent need to decarbonize. In response to these compounding challenges, the UK government recently merged its Energy Security Plan and Net Zero Growth Plan into a cohesive strategy under its new “Powering Up Britain” plan. As part of this multi-faceted approach, the United Kingdom aims to advance its energy independence and economic security while simultaneously achieving a zero-carbon power sector by 2035.

Secretary Shapps will speak on the priorities of the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero for implementing the Powering Up Britain package and the department’s Industrial Decarbonization Challenge, which aims to support industrial clusters to decarbonize at scale. The secretary will also discuss the UK’s perspective on renewable energy deployment, energy sanctions on Russia, and support for Ukraine’s energy sector. Ambassador Richard Morningstar, founding chairman of the Global Energy Center, will moderate the conversation.

This conversation will take place on Zoom and will be broadcast on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.
