Corruption, far from being grease for the wheels of development, is a leach on democracy and open markets. Corruption undermines representation in a democratic system, fuels mass atrocities and human rights abuses, causes skewed economic decisions, and makes both democracy and economic markets more brittle and vulnerable to collapse. Corruption fundamentally changes the incentive structures that democratic institutions and economies rely on for legitimacy.
Join the Atlantic Council and The Sentry on Tuesday, December 7 from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm for an online discussion, “Combating Corruption through Cooperation: How Policymakers Can Work with the Financial Sector to Detect and Counter Corrupt Actors.” Ahead of the Summit for Democracy, former senior US government officials who have taken on leadership positions in the private sector will discuss the effects of corruption and how policymakers can work closely with financial institutions to detect and disrupt corruption and corrupt actors.
Former Acting Treasury Under Secretary Adam Szubin will provide a keynote address, followed by a panel with David Fein, Group General Counsel at Standard Chartered; Justyna Gudzowska, Director of Illicit Finance Policy at The Sentry; Michael Mosier, former Acting Director of the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network; Mary Beth Goodman, former National Security Council Senior Director for Democracy and Development; and Robert Peri, Managing Director of Sanctions Compliance at CitiBank. Brian O’Toole, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center, moderates.
