On October 11, 2023, The Atlantic Council GeoTech Center hosted a public, multi-stakeholder hybrid event discussing data strategies for an AI-powered government. This event accompanied the release of the GeoTech Center’s findings on the challenges and opportunities to making data “AI-ready” across the Federal enterprise, along with recommendations for planning, piloting, and procurement.

The rapid increase in demand within the public sector to use AI-based tools through cloud service providers for a wide variety of use cases poses significant challenges for Federal Chief Information Officers (CIOs), Chief Data Officers (CDOs), and other IT stakeholders in the data ecosystem. The technical applications of AI built on Federal data are extensive, including hyper-personalization of information and service delivery, predictive analytics, autonomous systems, pattern and anomaly detection, and more.

Following a brief overview of our findings, the event led off with a fireside chat on how to bring data-driven AI insights to the Federal enterprise featuring leaders from the public and private sectors. Additional experts from the public and private sectors, including from the White House and the DoD, discussed what agencies can do and are doing to successfully plan and develop data-centric AI applications, and to pilot and scale data and AI for mission impact.
