Please join the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center for the next episode of EnergySource Innovation Stream. This series highlights energy innovations with the potential to reshape the global energy system through discussions with the companies and individuals working diligently to enable those innovations to impact and accelerate the energy transition. On Monday, August 8 from 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. ET, the Global Energy Center will host Glenn Schatz, chief revenue officer at BlocPower, to discuss the company’s Civilian Climate Corps program, which trains and places people from high-risk communities in the climate tech workforce. Julia Pyper, nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center, will moderate the discussion.

The energy transition will involve an infrastructure transformation the likes of which has never been seen before. Pipes and appliances will have to be fitted for hydrogen use, gas furnaces will need to be swapped out for electric boilers and heat pumps, and rooftop solar installations may have to increase in order to offset issues with grid-scale deployment and interconnection. Decarbonization thus calls for a massive mobilization of skilled labor to put all the pieces in place. But a daunting skills gap, especially in communities that have historically been blocked from high-quality jobs and financial security, stands in the way.

To address this gap, BlocPower created the Civilian Climate Corps, to connect people from dispossessed areas to job training resources and placements on clean energy projects. By doing so, BlocPower assists in the formation of a sustainable workforce whose abilities project leaders can count on well after the conclusion of the initial placement. BlocPower’s partners include the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, along with several notable clean energy companies.
