With growing economic inequality, populist gains in local elections and the possibility of victory for nationalist candidates, US retrenchment, and demographic shifts, the future of the European continent is uncertain.  These issues are not new, but today’s challenges can no longer be addressed at the national level. Crises of demography, economy, and security exacerbate one another, multiplying their combined potential to destabilize and fracture Europe’s inclusive, cooperative, and democratic spirit.  How Europe, as a region, responds to key uncertainties–from the fallout from Brexit to Russian antagonism in the East– will determine its future.

Europe in 2022 is part of the Atlantic Council Strategy Papers series, joining our regional strategies, ANew Strategy for US-Iran Relations by Ellen Laipson, A Measured US Strategy for the New Africa by J. Peter Pham, and Beyond the Headlines: A Strategy for US Engagement with Latin America in the Trump Era by Peter Schechter and Jason Marczak. You may view the entire series on ACStrategy.net.
