Please join the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security for the next Commanders Series event with the deputy chairman of NATO’s Military Committee Lt. Gen. Mark O. Schissler, which will take place at the Madison Hotel in Washington, DC on May 6, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
As the crisis in eastern Ukraine continues to unfold, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is taking steps to reassure allies and enhance its posture in Europe. For the past few weeks, NATO leaders have been reviewing proposals from NATO Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Philip Breedlove to respond to the crisis. On April 15, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the Alliance will re-examine defense planning and hold multinational exercises, as well as carry out “appropriate deployments” of Allied air, land, and naval forces. Schissler will discuss NATO’s military response to the Ukraine crisis as well as other key issues, and will then sit down with Atlantic Council Vice President and Scowcroft Center Director Barry Pavel for a moderated discussion.
The Commanders Series is sponsored by Saab Americas and is the preeminent platform for military leaders to discuss strategic issues with an audience drawn from the broader Washington policy community. Recent Commanders Series events include US Marine Corps Commandant James F. Amos, US Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, and former NATO ACT Commanders Stephane Abrial.
