An address and discussion with
H.E. Carl Haglund
Minster of Defense
Republic of Finland

Introduced and Moderated by
Damon Wilson
Executive Vice President
Atlantic Council

Building on the successes of Nordic Defense Cooperation (NORDEFCO), Minister Haglund will make a case for both NATO member and partner countries to follow a similar framework to sustain current interoperability levels and military readiness as the Alliance draws down from its mission in Afghanistan in 2014. NORDEFCO’s five members states—Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—use regional networks to increase their interoperability via borderless cooperation, establish necessary military capabilities, and provide cost-effective contributions to international efforts. With the 2014 NATO Summit fast approaching, Minister Haglund will discuss how NORDEFCO can be used as model for transatlantic “Smart Defense” initiatives going forward.
