Please join the Atlantic Council for the first in a series of discussions on Russia Today and Tomorrow: Internal Strengths and Weaknesses.
Since assuming office at the turn of the millennium, President Putin has placed a premium on restoring Russia’s role as a great power. He put in place policies designed, at least initially, to force start economic growth, to rebuild the Russian state and military, and to reassert Russian prerogatives on the global stage.
To restore Russian power a strong, efficient economy is essential and so is a stable, growing and well educated population. Thanks to ongoing unhealthy mortality rates, the expenses of child rearing and opportunities abroad for educated and mobile Russians, the population has not grown at the rate sought by Kremlin officials.
The first panel, "Russia's Demography: The Basis for a Prosperous Future?" will explore the nuances of Russia's demography.
We hope you can join us for this timely discussion.
