Under President Putin, the Russian government has worked to methodically shut down independent media. Many journalists critical of the regime have faced harassment, were forced to resign, or  have  left Russia.

Headquartered in Riga, Latvia, is one of the world’s largest independent Russian-language media outlets. Galina Timchenko, who leads the publication, is the former editor-in-chief of Russian news website — one of the most popular outlets in Runet at the time of her dismissal in spring of 2014. Meduza is run by a team of Russian journalists who resigned from their jobs at following Timchenko’s unexpected removal from her post by the website’s owner and Vladimir Putin ally, the oligarch Alexander Mamut.
