On July 11, President Trump signed an executive order to delay by three months a final decision on the course of US-Sudan relations. The administration promises to revoke much of the decades-old sanctions regime if the Sudanese government “is assessed to have sustained progress” on key issues of concern at the end of the extended review period. In the meantime, a general license remains in place which “broadly authorizes U.S. persons to process transactions involving persons in Sudan; engage in imports from and exports to Sudan; and engage in transactions involving property in which the [Government of Sudan] has an interest.”
In light of that announcement, the Task Force report argues for sustained and deepened US engagement with Sudan in the next three months and beyond—both to achieve US interests and to support peace, security, and inclusive governance for the Sudanese people.
