TTIP is one of the most important trade agreements in history. Prominent leaders in the United States and Europe have praised it as a monumental effort to reduce barriers to trade. Commissioner Malmström will discuss the most important issue in transatlantic trade relations: Will TTIP be concluded this year? What progress is being made on its various components? How will TTIP serve as the bedrock for future trade agreements of this scale?
Cecilia Malmström is the European Trade Commissioner. In her capacity as European Trade Commissioner, she pursues an ambitious trade agenda to the benefit of European citizens, SMEs, and the broader economy and negotiates bilateral trade agreements with key countries, including reaching a balanced and reasonable Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the United States that respects Europe’s safety, health, social, and data protection standards, and our cultural diversity.
From 2010 to 2014 she was the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, which focuses on human trafficking, border control, and migrant policy. From 2006 to 2010 she served as the Swedish Minister for EU Affairs. From 1999 to 2006 she was a member of the European Parliament, and worked mainly on foreign affairs, human rights, and EU enlargement.
