The Scottish Referendum: Where Does the United Kingdom Go from Here

Featuring remarks by:

The Right Honourable Lord Robertson
Former Secretary General of NATO
and
Former Secretary of State for Defense for the United Kingdom

Moderated by:
Frederick Kempe
President and CEO
Atlantic Council

Today is a historic moment for the United Kingdom, as voters go to the polls to determine whether Scotland will remain a part of the United Kingdom or declare itself an independent state. Regardless of the outcome, the referendum poses deep questions for the United Kingdom. There is a serious risk that, should Scotland vote “yes,” the UK will spend at least the next eighteen months mired in independence negotiations, negatively impacting its ability to maintain a leadership role at the international level. Will we see the emergence of a wider debate over the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union and NATO? What will Scotland need to be able to succeed as an independent state? A “no” vote, on the other hand, could necessitate a reevaluation of the nature of politics in the United Kingdom. The government in Westminster recently backed measures to give Scotland further control over its own welfare, taxation, and finance policies if it stays a part of the United Kingdom. How will the UK leadership move forward after such a profound challenge to its unity and authority?

To discuss the impact of the referendum on the transatlantic alliance, and to consider the immediate and long-term ramifications of the results, the Atlantic Council will host a members’ conference call only hours after the announcement of the referendum results.

Please join Atlantic Council President and CEO Fred Kempe tomorrow, September 19, at 9 a.m. ET for a moderated discussion with George Robertson, senior counselor at The Cohen Group, and Atlantic Council International Advisory Board Member. This event will be on-the-record and time will be provided for questions and answers.
