On Tuesday, October 20, at 1:00 pm ET, the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center will host a discussion on the latest developments in Russia’s war on Ukraine and US efforts to end the fighting.
New tensions have emerged in the US-Ukraine relationship following President Donald Trump’s “diesel deal” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump has touted the deal as a means of lowering diesel prices in the US, even though the volumes Russia can supply are unlikely to have an impact on prices. Moreover, Trump appears to be insisting that Ukraine halt strikes on Russian oil refineries as part of a claimed ceasefire, though Moscow continues to rain missiles and drones on Ukrainian civilians and energy infrastructure, in defiance of the US president.
This conversation will examine the implications of Trump’s diesel deal with Putin amid continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, and the state of the US-Ukraine relationship.
