For decades, the United States has been the global leader in civilian nuclear power and the international nuclear safety and nonproliferation system that supports it. However, US leadership is under strain, challenged by the continuing and premature closure of US nuclear plants, the decline of our domestic nuclear fuel-cycle capabilities, and the ambitious domestic and international nuclear energy programs of Russia and China.
Over the course of 2018, Atlantic Council Global Energy Center convened a Task Force on US Nuclear Energy Leadership to assess the national security implications of decline of the US nuclear power industry and make recommendations for encouraging innovation and investment in the domestic fleet and nuclear exports to the competitive international market.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Senator Mike Crapo, the honorary co-chairs of the Task Force, will deliver keynote remarks, followed by a panel to discuss nuclear energy’s role in US national security, the US nuclear supply chain and infrastructure, and exports of nuclear technologies, among other topics.
Join us on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for what promises to be an exciting and informative discussion. This event is on-the-record and open to the media. A networking reception will take place following the event from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Click here to RSVP.
