On Friday, December 19 at 3:00 p.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center (AALAC) will host a conversation unpacking recent developments in Honduras’ electoral process.
Official results from Honduras’ general election remain pending nearly three weeks after the vote, with the two leading candidates separated by a slim margin. The National Electoral Council has yet to begin a special review of more than 2,700 tally sheets that presented inconsistencies, a step that could prove decisive. The process has stalled as both the Liberal Party and governing LIBRE party have declined to accredit representatives to participate, while simultaneously raising fraud allegations and calling for a vote-by-vote recount. LIBRE has said it would not recognize the results and has urged public officials not to cooperate in a transition it considers illegitimate. With limited time under the law to certify results and protests growing, the coming days will be critical.
This virtual discussion will explore the factors driving post-election tensions, the steps still ahead in the process, and what is at stake for public trust and stability.
*This event will be held in Spanish. Simultaneous virtual interpretation into English will be available*
