On May 24, the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center hosted a discussion “Roadmaps on International Energy Cooperation in Southeast Europe” with Ambassador André Mernier, Secretary General of the Energy Charter Secretariat and Dr. Anita Orbán, Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Boyko Nitzov, Director of Programs for the Patriciu Eurasia Center, moderated the discussion.

Ambassador Mernier stressed the importance of an international legal framework, such as the Energy Charter, to enhance energy security and multi-lateral cooperation in Europe. The dynamics of energy policy making were discussed as well as recent developments in shale gas and LNG. Dr. Orban outlined key energy issues in Central Eastern Europe such as efficiency, dependence on external sources and environmental protection. Both speakers talked about existing and future energy projects in the region, in particular those in Central Eastern Europe.
