Bee Yun Jo, PhD, is a nonresident senior fellow in the Indo-Pacific Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and an associate research fellow in the Defense Strategy Division at the Center for Security and Strategy at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses. Before joining KIDA in 2020, she was a research professor at the Institute of International Affairs at Seoul National University and a full-time lecturer at East Asia International College at Yonsei University. Her research focuses on South Korea’s deterrence and defense strategy, particularly ROK-US extended deterrence, US nuclear strategy, and alliance and armament in Northeast Asia. Her recent publications include US’s Low-yield Nuclear Weapons and Extended Deterrence on the Korean Peninsula (Seoul: KIDA, 2021), “Plan B for Non-Nuclear States in East Asia: Debating on Nuclear Latency as Means for Potential Deterrence” (National Strategy, Vol. 27, No. 4, 2021), and “Retrofitting American Extended Deterrent” (Journal of Peace and Unification, 2022). Her publications also appear in Asian Perspective, International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, Korean Social Science Journal, Korean Journal of Security Affairs, and others. She is an advisory committee member of the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of Arms Control and Nonproliferation. She is also an editorial board member of the Korean Political Science Association, a member of the planning board of the Korean Association for Political and Diplomatic History, and an advisory committee member of the National Unification Advisory Council. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with honors, from Rhode Island School of Design. She received an MA (valedictorian) and a PhD in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University.
