Deng Liu is a visiting fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Freedom and Prosperity Center and a graduate student in the democracy and governance program at Georgetown University. Originally from Qinhuangdao, mainland China, Deng immigrated to the United States with his mother at the age of seventeen.

Deng earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in history from the University of California, Irvine, while earning the Chancellor’s Award of Distinction. He also studied abroad at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and participated in the University of California Washington Center program.

His main research focus is on the East Asian region and especially on countering authoritarian measures.
