Tariff on the Rising Sun

In April of this year, Suniva, a Chinese-owned, US-based solar manufacturer filed a rarely-used Section 201 petition with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), requesting the imposition of minimum prices for solar module imports into the United States. In May, German-based SolarWorld joined Suniva’s petition, and in September, the ITC ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, ultimately recommending up to a 35 percent tariff on imported solar modules.

Multilateral Sanctions: Brexit Wrecks-it?

On October 3, 2017, the Atlantic Council hosted a conference with experts from the public and private sector to discuss the impact of Brexit on economic sanctions policymaking. The United Kingdom (UK) currently plays a considerable role crafting and implementing sanctions policy in the European Union (EU). Transatlantic cooperation and sanctions alignment are vital to ensure the effectiveness of this essential foreign policy tool.

The US Infrastruct-cure

Infrastructure investment stimulates economic growth. According to McKinsey & Company, an increase in infrastructure investment equal to 1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) would convert into an additional 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs in the United States. America’s infrastructure is in a state of disrepair.

Ole Moehr is a nonresident fellow and consultant with the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center. Previously, he served as the GeoEconomics Center’s associate director. In Moehr’s current capacity, he contributes to the center’s future of money work and conducts research on global finance, growth, and trade. As lead editor of the center’s Global QE Tracker, which visualizes central banks’ complex responses to the different economic shocks in the post-COVID world, Moehr helps deliver the Atlantic Council’s timely take on important issues pertaining to the global economy. Moehr’s project portfolio includes work on global monetary policy, central bank digital currencies, global value chains, the European Union’s economic architecture, and economic sanctions. His analysis and commentary have been featured in Axios, the New York Times, and Euronews, among others.

Prior to joining the Council, Moehr served as a Brent Scowcroft Award fellow at the Aspen Institute. He holds a master’s degree in international economics from the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and a bachelor’s degree in global governance and public policy from the University of Passau in Germany.
