Jason Marczak, a Latin America expert from The Atlantic Council in Washington D.C., told me “Criticism of stadium cost overruns is actually a shout across the bow that the citizenry of the new Brazil, a more middle class Brazil, demands greater transparency and a new more responsive state model.” As Brazil’s national soccer team takes to the field, the world should also take a moment to recognize the success of the country’s progressive policymakers.

“Brazil has made impressive achievements in socioeconomic growth in the last decade with tens of millions of people moving from poverty into the middle class,” Marczak added.
