WASHINGTON, DC – The Atlantic Council, together with U.S. Missions and Embassies, will host #DisinfoWeek Europe, a series of strategic dialogues focused on the global challenge of disinformation. Public events will take place in Athens, Madrid, and Brussels in March 2019.
As state and non-state actors seek to influence Western democracies through targeted disinformation campaigns across multiple media environments, policymakers in Europe, the United States, and around the world recognize the growing threat to international security. To buttress governmental efforts, civil society groups, investigative journalists, think tanks, and tech platforms are also developing tools and tactics for countering and exposing disinformation narratives. In an effort to advance the transatlantic partnership on countering disinformation as national and EU parliamentary elections approach, we will host a series of events in Europe in March 2019 as part of #DisinfoWeek Europe.
#DisinfoWeek Europe is on-the-record and open to the press upon accreditation, and will begin with discussions in Athens and Madrid, followed by a capstone conference in Brussels that will convene media and technology companies, political leaders, activists, and researchers across Europe and the United States to discuss opportunities for collaboration and strategies to build a transatlantic response to disinformation. On March 8, the Brussels event will host a special session for media and journalists, focusing on the issue of Reporting in the Age of Disinformation.
