H.E. Shinzō Abe
Shinzo Abe was born in Tokyo in 1954. After graduating from Seikei University with a BS in political science, he joined Kobe Steel, Ltd. in 1979. In 1982, he started serving as executive assistant to the minister for foreign affairs.
In 1993, he was elected as member of the House of Representatives, and thereafter he was reelected in seven consecutive elections. He represents the Yamaguchi fourth district, which includes the cities of Shimonoseki and Nagato. In 1999, he became trustee, committee on health and welfare as well as director, social affairs division of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
After serving as deputy chief cabinet secretary in the Mori cabinet and the Koizumi cabinet, he became chief cabinet secretary in the Koizumi cabinet in 2005. In 2006, he became the president of LDP and prime minister, serving until 2007 and becoming Japan’s youngest leader since World War II and the first prime minister born after World War II.
He has been prime minister of Japan since 2012 and has continued to lead Japan. During his most recent tenure as prime minister, he launched an economic program – often referred to as “Abenomics” – to stimulate Japan’s economy and assist the areas still recovering from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Abe has also taken steps to bolster Japan’s national security and develop stronger relationships with countries in the region.
