Bahamian prime minister urges action on climate change, financial inclusion, and regional cooperation

By Nick Fouriezos

Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas and chair of the Caribbean Community, told the Atlantic Council that the region is ready to take action on improving energy security and economic development.

Caribbean Climate Change & Climate Action

The Atlantic Council hosted an #ACFrontPage conversation with the Hon. Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas and chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the trajectory for US-Caribbean relations during what will be a pivotal year for the partnership.

CARICOM is facing several daunting challenges. High inflation, including fast-rising costs for food and fuel, is slowing the return to pre-pandemic economic growth rates. The region is aiming to attract new foreign investment, shepherd emerging industries, and reduce its dependency on imports. With five Caribbean leaders visiting Washington on the back of the newly announced Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030, last year marked a hopeful milestone for US-Caribbean cooperation. How can CARICOM build on this momentum in 2023?

In his first trip to Washington as head of government, Davis joined us for a conversation on his vision for CARICOM and the US-Caribbean relationship in advance of his meeting with top US officials. What steps should the US government and private sector take to promote regional energy resilience, food security, and financial inclusion? How can the United States, The Bahamas, and the rest of CARICOM work together to set the region up for long-term success?
