The Atlantic Council’s Europe Center is pleased to host an event on progressive approaches to containing Russian aggression on Friday, March 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET / 16:30 hrs – 17:30 hrs GMT. This event will feature UK Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy MP, US Senator Bernie Sanders, and Delara Burkhardt MEP, leading progressive policymakers from across the transatlantic community, to discuss their views on how counter-kleptocracy and decarbonization plans can be implemented to cripple Putin’s war chest and contain Russian aggression.

As global condemnation for the Russian invasion of Ukraine grows, the transatlantic community has been facing a reckoning for accommodating the corruption and aggression of Vladimir Putin’s regime. Progressive policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic are leading calls for change in reshaping approaches to Russia and crafting strategies to contain Russian aggression.

How do policy topics normally associated with progressive causes, such as counter-kleptocracy and decarbonization, fit within a strategic shift towards containing Russian aggression? Would this moment provide the popular momentum needed to drive through the reforms that progressives have demanded? How would that momentum be maintained amid the economic consequences of Russia’s disconnection from the global financial system?
