On Tuesday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programs will host an #ACFrontPage conversation with Asaad al-Shaibani, the Syrian minister of foreign affairs. He will discuss his and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s meetings with US President Donald Trump, share insights on the country’s political transition, and outline the government’s vision for the future.
The collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024 marked a turning point in Syria’s modern history. Since then, the transitional government has pursued efforts to rebuild institutions, restore sovereignty, and set a new strategic direction for the nation. But daunting challenges remain, including deep political, regional, and sectarian divides, a volatile geopolitical environment, and domestic economic challenges.
Al-Shaibani will reflect on al-Sharaa’s decision to join the US-led anti-ISIS coalition, assess Syria’s progress to date, and outline his vision for the country’s evolving global and regional role.
