The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative, Europe Center, and Eurasia Center, in partnership with GLOBSEC, are pleased to host “How to beat Russia: Observations from Ukraine’s homeland defense.” This conversation will take place in-person and virtually on Wednesday, March 29, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.

Russia’s illegal re-invasion of Ukraine has revealed the importance of rethinking defense posture, enhancing strategic communications, and employing a whole-of-society approach to defense and deterrence. Ukraine has thwarted Russian forces in several key regions and undermined Russia’s original objectives in Ukraine, despite Ukraine’s military being significantly outnumbered in terms of conventional forces compared to Russia. The resilience of Ukrainian forces against Russian forces is not only a beacon of hope and freedom for the transatlantic community but also evidence that excellent leadership skills, effective command and control structures, and a whole-of-society approach are key elements for defending against adversaries.

The event will feature insights from GLOBSEC’s recent report How to beat Russia: What armed forces in NATO should learn from Ukraine’s homeland defense authored by Nico Lange, Senior Advisor to GLOBSEC and former Chief of  Staff at the German Federal Ministry of Defense. The report outlines key strategies that Ukraine has utilized for its defense and addresses lessons for NATO and its member states to draw upon in order to better deter and defend against Russia, noting especially the human and operational elements of Ukraine’s successful defense. A panel discussion with transatlantic experts and officials in Washington will discuss how NATO and the transatlantic community can best support Ukraine’s continued operations and how the transatlantic Alliance must adapt for the future based on observations from the battlefield in Ukraine and Russia’s brutal war of aggression.

This discussion will take place in-person and virtually via Zoom, and will be broadcast on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. To receive event information, please register using the button above. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with information on how to join the event.
