As the global community continues to grapple with the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Atlantic Council is open for business. Our business, meetings, and events, however, are occurring virtually. For more information, please read an update from our President and CEO.

Please join the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center for the invite-only portion of our event on “The Way Forward for Transatlantic Sanctions.” This private, off the record, roundtable will focus on implementation, compliance, and impact on financial markets. We are pleased to welcome Alina Nedea, Head of Sanctions, Directorate General for Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (FISMA), European Commission; Gijs Verhagen, Policy Officer, Countering the Financing of Terrorism and Sanctions, Dutch Ministry of Finance; Eléonore Peyrat, Head of Fight against financial crime and International Sanctions Office and Head of the French Delegation for FATF, French Treasury; and Aimee Langley, Head of Compliance, Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, UK Treasury. The conversation will be moderated by Brian O’Toole, Nonresident Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center. This virtual roundtable will take place on Tuesday, November 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Economic sanctions have become a default setting for the US government and Congress to respond to policy problems that require more than a demarche and less than military action. Under the uncertain policy direction of the Trump administration, many of the gains achieved through the sanctions have unraveled while failing credibility and uneven application are weakening the tool. The US, UK, and EU must work hand in hand to ensure proper implementation and compliance, integrate sanctions into broader efforts to counter illicit finance, and mitigate adverse impact on industry and financial markets.

Please join this conversation via the web application Zoom, which is accessible through your web browser, the Zoom desktop or mobile app, and by phone.
