On November 20 at 10:00 a.m. ET/6:00 p.m. TRT, the Atlantic Council’s Turkey Program and Eurasia Center hosted a discussion on Turkish presence in Central Asia and its implications for US foreign policy.
In recent years, there has been growing recognition in Washington of the importance of Central Asia, due to its strategic location between Russia, Iran, and China. Given the constraints of geography and the historic ties of the region to Russia (and, to a lesser extent, China), US influence has not been what it could be.
Turkey, a treaty ally of the United States, has carefully cultivated a notable presence in the region. The discussion explored the history, advancements, and limitations of Turkey’s efforts to expand its influence in the region and critically assess areas of alignment with US foreign policy objectives, offering numerous recommendations for policymakers.
