On Wednesday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m. ET, the Global Energy Center’s Transatlantic Climate and Energy Security program will host a fireside chat with Geoffrey Pyatt, assistant secretary of state for energy resources, to reflect on the progress Europe and the United States made in decoupling and to assess the path to diversification for remaining dependencies.
Europe’s energy markets were impacted the hardest by the crisis manufactured by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Nonetheless, the nations achieved unprecedented decoupling from Russian energy sources following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With alternative oil, coal, and gas supplies—most recently underscored by the expiring of the Ukraine transit agreement, Europe unshackled Russia’s ability to weaponize its exports and reduce revenues to fuel atrocities, but threats remain: growing liquid natural gas exports, the risk of returned pipeline flows, and remaining sales of on nuclear fuel and critical materials to Europe.
Pyatt will examine a path for global allies to get ahead of future supply constraints and support Europe’s continued efforts to strengthen its energy security through bolstered trade and innovation cooperation.
This event will take place at Atlantic Council headquarters and will be broadcast on ACTV, YouTube, X, and Facebook. To attend this conversation, please register using the form on this page.
