Carmiel Mahony

Carmiel Mahony is a nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programs and Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative. Her research focuses on regional security, democratic governance, conflict resolution, congressional foreign policy, and political transformation in the Middle East, with particular interests in civil society, women’s political participation, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda. She has published widely in leading policy journals and international media and is a regular television and radio commentator on Middle East affairs, U.S. foreign policy, and regional security.

Mahony is the co-founder of Key Bridge Strategies, an international advisory firm that has counseled nonprofit organizations and public institutions on government relations, strategic communications, coalition building, and public diplomacy. She has advised organizations and led training initiatives across the United States, the Middle East, Cyprus, Sudan, Sri Lanka, and Mexico.

Prior to joining the Atlantic Council, Mahony held senior positions in public affairs, policy, and government relations in Washington, D.C. She previously conducted research on regional security and international affairs at the Brookings Institution and has worked on diplomacy, governance, and conflict mitigation initiatives throughout her career.

Mahony earned a B.A. from George Washington University and an M.S. with distinction from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Women in Foreign Policy Group, is a Truman National Security Fellow, and is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
