Elizabeth Freund Larus is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub. She is also professor emerita of political science and former departmental chairman of the Department of Political Science and International Affairs at the University of Mary Washington. She was a 2020 Fulbright research scholar to Poland and a 2015 Taiwan fellow. She is president of E Larus Consulting LLC, a geopolitical consulting firm that provides clients analysis of critical political, security, and economic trends in the Indo-Pacific, as well as insight into US foreign policymaking.

Larus has more than thirty years of experience writing and commenting on the domestic politics and foreign policies of the United States, China, and Taiwan. She regularly offers commentary to Al Jazeera, BBC, CNBC Asia, Deutsche Welle, the Financial Times, France24, Vietnam News, WION News (India), and the South China Morning Post.

She is the author of the books Politics & Society in Contemporary China—both its first and second edition (2012 and 2020)—and Economic Reform in China (2005), as well as more than thirty scholarly articles and book chapters. Her most recent publication is the book chapter “Taiwan’s Military Posture toward China’s Confrontational Stance.”
