WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 31, 2022 – The Atlantic Council Global Energy Center today announced the seventh annual Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference will be held June 14, 2022, in Washington, D.C. in cooperation with the Visegrád Group. This year’s conference returns to an in-person format for the first time since 2019, while also taking advantage of participation from a virtual audience around the world.
The Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference is the leading platform in Washington, DC, for addressing key energy security and climate issues in the region. The conference is part of the Global Energy Center’s European Energy Security portfolio which aims to evaluate how the United States and the European Union can cooperate to strengthen transatlantic energy security.
“The Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference holds particular significance this year as energy export revenues fund the Kremlin’s aggression in Ukraine, while its supplies to Europe are utilized for geopolitical leverage. Central and Eastern Europe play a critical role in defending European energy security in the midst of these hybrid threats, and US engagement on these efforts has never been more crucial,” said Randolph Bell, Senior Director of the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center.
This year’s Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference will feature the perspectives of senior government and private sector leaders on removing energy as an enabler of Russian aggression in the region and identifying opportunities for transatlantic cooperation. Conference participants will explore how Central and Eastern Europe can advance energy security and climate action by diversifying its oil and gas imports, investing in critical energy infrastructure, accelerating decarbonization, and rebuilding Ukraine’s energy systems. Ambassador Richard Morningstar, Founding Chairman of the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center noted, “These efforts must be compatible with meeting Europe’s climate targets to ensure that security and decarbonization goals are pursued in tandem.”
This event is held in cooperation with the Visegrád Group and will bring together key decision-makers in the US administration, members of Congress, key stakeholders in the business community, embassies of the Central and Eastern European regions, the Delegation of the European Union, and experts from the think tank community. The conference will be hosted at the Atlantic Council’s Washington office with an in-person audience. The event will also be livestreamed.
