Top News: Heavy Shooting Lasting Hours in Libya’s Capital Tripoli

Heavy fighting erupted throughout Tripoli on Tuesday between militias using rifles, grenades, and anti-aircraft weapons. It is the worst violence the capital has experienced in weeks. The shooting started when a militia member was detained at a checkpoint and fellow fighters arrived trying to free him, according to a militia source.

Shortly after the revolution there was great optimism among Libyans that one in the rapid succession of central governments would successfully lead the country. Those hopes were never realized because the highly centralized governance held over from the Qaddafi years ignored the fundamental shift in power to the peripheral municipalities that resulted from the revolution.
