Please join the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and its Forward Defense program for “Game-changers or Little-changed? Implications of Ground Combat in Ukraine” on Monday, April 3, 2023 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET in person and via Zoom. This event will feature the launch of an Atlantic Council issue brief by Dr. T.X. Hammes which discusses how the performance of the Russian and Ukrainian armies should shape the strategies, operating concepts, programs, and plans of the United States and its allies and partners. To attend virtually or in-person please REGISTER on the right.
Does the record of combat in Ukraine herald an important shift in the character of ground war? A year into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, defense analysts are split on whether the conflict manifests transformative change or merely reinforces the verities of ground combat. On the one hand, over ninety percent of each armies’ forces and equipment were formed and trained by twentieth-century standards. However, both forces are adapting, and the Ukrainian military is demonstrating an impressive propensity to improvise and innovate. In particular, Russia was not prepared for Ukraine’s convergence of new capabilities in command and control, persistent surveillance, and massed, precision fires which are changing the game of ground warfare.
The event will feature keynote remarks by Brigadier General Mark H. Clingan, the deputy commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command. The event will also include a presentation of the paper by Dr. Hammes, and a discussion of the papers findings by a panel of experts including Dr. John E. Whitley, Lieutenant General Leopoldo Quintas, Dara Massicot and Gary Dunow. The panel will be moderated by Jen Judson.
