On Thursday, January 15 at 10:00 a.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center will host a discussion examining Russia’s partnerships in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Moscow lost an important regional ally in Latin America after a US military operation removed Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro from power. Moscow stood aside as US and Israeli strikes in 2025 weakened Iran and Hamas, both Kremlin partners in the Middle East, after Russia lost its longtime alliance with the Assad regime in Syria at the end of 2024. Tehran now faces increasingly widespread anti-government protests and further criticism from US President Donald Trump. In Africa, Russia’s shifting footprint carries important security implications for the continent.

This conversation, moderated by Ambassador John Herbst, will explore how US policy should adjust to Russia’s weakening clout abroad.
