On January 7, the Atlantic Council Turkey Programs hosted an online discussion on the future of NATO and US-Turkey defense relations where we also launched the newest issue of the Defense Journal by the Atlantic Council Turkey Programs, which explores NATO in an evolving geopolitical landscape.

The end of 2024 saw significant changes to the security landscape of the United States, Turkey, and their NATO partners. Following years of stalemate, the opposition’s breakthrough in Syria and the fall of the Assad regime opens new opportunities and risks that demand close coordination. Escalation in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and increasing collaboration between Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea require new strategies and a focus on hard power to deter and defend the Western-led international order. The incoming Trump administration will face the challenges of heightened great power competition and regional volatility. Facing this complex environment, deeper cooperation between NATO allies is essential.

The Defense Journal, published by the Atlantic Council in Turkey, is a periodic report providing independent analysis and insights regarding defense issues related to the United States, Turkey, and the regions around Turkey. The Defense Journal’s co-editors are Can Kasapoğlu, nonresident senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, and Rich Outzen, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council Turkey Programs.
