Coronavirus and the oil market: The effects thus far and what to expect next

The week of February 21 will be one the oil market won’t soon forget—one which exposed exactly how sensitive the prices are to the demand side of the market. Yet, while the possibility of a major supply correction remains in the cards, a longer-term correction to the oil price collapse of the past week will require a restoration of market confidence in economic growth and the future oil demand picture.

The role of oil and gas companies in the energy transition

Many oil and gas companies have recognized the need to decarbonize the energy system to avoid the impacts of climate change. Initial industry efforts to play a role in the energy transition show sincerity and promise. Yet the urgent need for more oil and gas production for the foreseeable future suggests that a comprehensive framework for the oil and gas industry to support a low-carbon future while simultaneously ensuring the world has enough energy to meet development and economic growth goals has yet to be fully developed. What role can the oil and gas industry play lead the way to an energy-rich, globally prosperous, low-carbon future?

Reed Blakemore is director with the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center, where he is responsible for the center’s research, strategy, and program development. His work focuses on oil and gas markets, critical minerals, trade and geopolitical risk, and the evolution of bilateral relationships in the energy transition. Reed is the author of several Global Energy Center reports, including, The Role of Minerals in US Transportation Electrification Goals, Enhancing US-Japan Cooperation on Clean Energy Technologies, and The Role of Oil and Gas Companies in the Energy Transition. He has spoken in front of the US House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, and has been featured in Bloomberg, S&P Global Platts, and Al Jazeera, among others.

Prior to joining the Atlantic Council, Reed held positions at the International Institute for Strategic Studies – US and at the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He earned a master’s degree from the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs in Security Policy Studies, with emphases in defense analysis and transnational security Issues. He received a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Redlands, where he was also a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.
