The Strategic Litigation Project (SLP) advances innovative legal strategies to secure accountability for gender-based crimes and other serious human rights violations where domestic justice systems have failed. Centering survivor-led litigation and grounded in international criminal law and human rights law, the SLP works to expose and challenge patterns of gender persecution, sexual and gender-based violence, and other core international crimes or human rights violations with gendered impacts. A cornerstone of this work is the landmark universal jurisdiction complaint filed in Argentina by a group of survivors and the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, with SLP’s support, for crimes against humanity including gender persecution, murder, torture, and targeted blinding of protesters during the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in Iran in 2022. By leveraging extraterritorial jurisdiction and international investigative findings, the SLP demonstrates how strategic litigation can transform documentation into concrete legal action and open new pathways to justice for victims of gender-based violence worldwide.
