CCS in Norway: Propelling global innovation for decarbonization

Northern Lights, a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project backed, in part, by the Norwegian government is set to bolster European and global carbon capture innovation, accelerating climate progress and exemplifying the next wave of global CCS facilities.

Lee Beck is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center. Beck is senior vice president for global policy and commercial strategy at HIF Global, an international electro-fuel company. Beck serves on the advisory boards of Project Tempo and Energy Policy Group Romania.

Prior to HIF Global, Beck served as the Clean Air Task Force’s (CATF’s) senior director in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, overseeing CATF’s climate strategy. She was also responsible for advancing CATF’s global climate policy efforts, including its presence at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Beck helped launch the global Nuclear Scaling Initiative, which scales nuclear energy in the United States and Central and Eastern Europe. She is also expert in carbon management technologies, having worked in this field at both the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute and CATF. Under her leadership, the team helped secure $12 billion in funding for carbon capture, removal, and storage in the US Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, as well as to make improvements to the 45Q tax credit in the Inflation Reduction Act.

She also worked for the Vermont Energy Investment Cooperation, at Eni USA in their Washington, DC, International Relations Office, and the European Union’s Delegation to the United States. She has also worked as a journalist, reporting for multiple outlets from Germany, Italy, Tanzania, and Hong Kong.

Beck’s commentary and expertise on climate and energy issues has been quoted in Bloomberg, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, and Tagesspiegel.

Beck has an MA in international affairs and economics with concentrations in energy, resources, and environment and political economy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. A German citizen and naturalized American, Beck speaks German, French, and Italian.
