On June 1, 2020, Pepe Zhang was quoted in an article in El Mercurio, “China fortalece su influencia en Latinoamérica con la masiva donación de insumos médicos” (“China strengthens its influence in Latin America with a massive donation of medical supplies”).

Originally in Spanish, Zhang’s contribution translates as follows: “Trade complementarity is what sustains China-Latin American relations. Bilateral trade grew by 25 times in recent decades, from a value of $12 billion in 1999 to $310 billion in 2019. It’s possible that in a post-COVID scenario, China will further expand its economic role in the region, in addition to being one of the first large economies of the world to recover (relatively) from the pandemic.”
