On November 10, 2019, Pepe Zhang was quoted in O Globo’s article, “China age com pragmatismo econômico quando pensa no Brasil” (“China acts with economic pragmatism when it thinks about Brazil”).

Zhang’s remarks, relayed in Portuguese, translate as follows: “Brazil is a large country that is interested in maintaining a long-term relationship with China. And the Belt and Road (“BRI”) is definitely happening in Latin America, but some of the largest economies in the region have not yet joined. This does not necessarily mean that these countries aren’t taking the BRI initiative seriously, just the opposite in fact. Something I want to make clear is that Brazil, even not having officially signed a BRI partnership, is using the BRI context as a tool to advance in relations with China.”
