On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, the Atlantic Council’s GeoTech Center and Accenture hosted Dr. Jennifer King, Director of Consumer Privacy at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, and Ms. Jana Gooth, legal policy advisor to MEP Alexandra Geese, for the inaugural episode of the jointly presented Data Salon Series. The event was co-hosted by Mr. Steven Tiell, Senior Principle, Responsible Innovation at Accenture and Dr. David Bray, Inaugural Director, GeoTech Center at the Atlantic Council.

Many IoT devices are manufactured abroad and many of these are extremely low cost with little consideration made for security. There is nothing inherently untrustworthy or insecure about foreign manufacturing, and individual firm and product lines are much more fruitful levels of analysis in establishing good security practices from bad. Importantly however—the United States has limited means to enforce its standards in foreign jurisdictions, like China, where the bulk of IoT products are manufactured.

Dr. David Bray on leadership in crisis situations

In a recent conversation with the team of OpenExo, Dr. David Bray, Director of the GeoTech Center, spoke on his expertise on government and popular response to crises, to offer guidance on how we as a society might leverage technology to emerge stronger from COVID-19. Citing his years of experience at the heart of teams in charge of anticipating and preventing crises, Dr. Bray explored the way that open societies in particular can take advantage of their strengths and identify threats before they come to fruition, without threatening individual liberties in the process. In order for this effort to succeed, though, Dr. Bray emphasized how intentional steps must be taken now to shape the future of data and society.
