United States and Canada

The United States has enjoyed an unparalleled period of peace and prosperity since the end of the Second World War, due to its construction of a rules-based international order and maintenance of close alliances and partnerships. Canada has been a key partner for the United States, both due to their close economic links and their shared border, the world’s longest at 5,525 miles. Canada is also a key NATO ally for the United States and is active in international diplomacy around the world.

The Neighbour From Hell

By the Economist

From the Economist: [T]he black hole in NATO’s security guarantee is that it has no formal contingency plans to defend its weakest members: the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. If Russia is NATO’s friend—so the thinking went in the early years of this decade—no such plans are necessary. America has its own military […]

Amb. Hunter: “they want to keep the United States… as a European power”

By the Council on Foreign Relations

From the Council on Foreign Relations: Everybody in Europe understands that managing the future of Russia in regard to Europe can only be done with American engagement and, yes, to a great extent, American leadership. And they want to keep the United States equally engaged in Europe as a European power, not just as an […]

The U.S.-Europe Partnership Under the Obama Administration

By the Department of State

From the Department of State: I am certainly aware that some have suggested that the centrality of the relationship between the United States and Europe has somehow diminished as a result of the many far-flung, global challenges the United States is facing today and the simultaneous rise of new powers. In my opinion, this view […]

Vaclac Havel on the Role of Russia in Central Europe

By Foreign Policy

From Foreign Policy: I think that America has not forgotten us, but it should still take into account that the terrain here in Central Europe is somewhat more explosive than other areas of conflict elsewhere in the world. World wars start here, not in Iran or Korea or anywhere else. But I have not yet […]

SecGen: We Must Now Demonstrate that Multilateralism Delivers Concrete Results

By the Atlantic Review

From the Atlantic Review: NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen is promising that there will be 7,000 additional troops from 25 countries to support Obama’s extended surge. Interestingly, one of the reasons he gave was the multilateralism of the US: If we are to make Afghanistan more stable, and ourselves more secure, we must all […]

Barack Obama: Last Transatlantic President?

By the Washington Note

From the Washington Note: On Afghanistan too, Europe has been reluctant, at best prepared to await the announcement of a new American strategy, at worst appearing to bandwagon on the back of American power when the perception in the US is that Europe’s security interests are at least as threatened by the situation in Afghanistan […]

Merkel on the Defensive in Afghanistan

By Spiegel

From Spiegel: US President Barack Obama is sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan and NATO has pledged an additional 7,000. But in Germany, demands for more soldiers will put Chancellor Merkel in a political bind and could result in a new trans-Atlantic tiff… Last Tuesday’s conversation between the US president and the German chancellor lasted […]

European Militaries Underfunded and Ill-Equipped

By the Wall Street Journal

From the Wall Street Journal: No amount of pleading and shaming has worked on the continentals. NATO launched the ‘Defense Capabilities Initiative’ in 1999, only to abandon it a few years later. Various attempts to stand up European ‘rapid reaction’ forces have floundered. Most European countries also commit more than half of what little they […]

NATO Announces More Forces to Afghanistan

By NATO

From NATO: [N]ations are backing up their words with deeds. At least 25 countries have announced that they will send more forces to the mission in 2010. They have offered around 7,000 new forces, with more to come. Counting the US contribution, that means ISAF will have at least 37,000 more soldiers in 2010 than […]
